The Art of Decoupage

 The Art of Decoupage
....the art or technique of decorating something with cut-outs of paper, fabric, plastic, or other flat material over which varnish or lacquer is applied.

My decoupaged desk

I recently repainted a desk that was all scratched up old wood. Again I didn't take a picture because it was so nasty looking that my kids were telling me to just throw it away. It had been in the basement waiting for a rescue, and the handles on it were loose and my teenagers would spin the handles, digging into the wood and causing a big circular scar around were the handles once Regally graced those drawers.
I decided to save it and transport it to my shore house where I could capture the serenity of the sea, and deliver some much needed body work to this once fabulous desk.
After cleaning it considerably and priming it up, I gave it a nice smooth coat of white. And then...
I wasn't too happy with the gouged out wood by the handle area., but I came up with a great idea.

I had a wallpaper border just laying around. I cut it to fit the drawer fronts. It is pre-pasted so all I had to do is wet it and set it on. When that was dry, I added some new drawer pulls and Viola! ...
Not too shabby!

You could also do this same thing with your favorite fabric and some mod-podge  a decoupage glue.

I think it looks adorable! And now I have a place to fix my hair.

The clutter from make-up, brushes, lotions, deodorant, etc, all goes in this "Home Goods" box!

Hand painted by my clever daughter this Mother's Day gift tray from a few years back
holds some of my seashells for a nice final touch!

I hope that one day I can have a beach house, too! It is one of my most treasured dreams. If it ever comes true I will so use your tips! I actually have a room in my house that I call the "beach" room. I'm so inspired to improve it by reading your blog!

Love this! Clean and fresh.

I decoupaged a bookcase for my daughter using dictionary pages and highlighting words that were special to me and her dad. She loved it!
